Flagstaff, Ariz. – For the second straight week, a Northern Arizona women's soccer player has claimed the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week. This week, senior defender Alana D'Onofrio has claimed the honor after an outstanding performance against UNLV Sunday night.
"I think it is a deserving honor for Alana and our whole backline," said head coach Andre Luciano. "Her work ethic and commitment to become one of the best defenders in the Big Sky was apparent on Sunday night."
D'Onofrio anchored a backline for the Lumberjacks that held UNLV scoreless for only the second time this season by an opponent. The Rebels have been an offensive juggernaut this season, scoring 12 goals in just five games. UNLV's Jenn Wolfe has been on a tear this season scoring four goals and putting up 17 shots. D'Onofrio disrupted Wolfe all night and held her to just one shot that was not on goal. UNLV's Susie Bernal has been a threat on offense handing out five assists with 14 shots this season; D'Onofrio and the defense locked her down for 110 minutes allowing Bernal only two shots that were not on goal. D'Onofrio and the Lumberjacks are still undefeated with a 3-0-2 record and are on top of the Big Sky Conference.
D'Onofrio and the rest of the Lumberjacks will look to continue the stellar defense Friday, Sept. 13, as they host Grand Canyon at 7:30 p.m. at Lumberjack Stadium.
