FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Lumberjack fans will get a first look at the 2014 Northern Arizona women's soccer team on Sat. Aug. 9 at 7:30 p.m. as the squad will split up in their Blue and Gold scrimmage.
"This is what we live to do and that is play," said head coach Andre Luciano. "This match allows us to assess where we are with our returners and to see how our freshman integrate from a chemistry standpoint."
This will be the first game action for the 11 incoming freshman as Lumberjacks and a chance for newcomers to impress the coaching staff. NAU returns six All-Big Sky Conference selections that include Savannah Berry, Diane Buzzard, Cierra Gamble, Danny Muniz, Sarah Tarver and Haley Wingender.
The 2013 season was a memorable one providing a lot of smiles, goals and wins for Lumberjacks Nation. After two years of not reaching the Big Sky Conference Championships, head coach Andre Luciano and the women brought the program back to where it belongs: in the playoffs.
Prior to the Lumberjacks taking the field, the men's Yavapai College soccer team will also host a scrimmage at 5 p.m. at Lumberjack Stadium. Yavapai College, located in Prescott, Ariz., has led the country in home attendance in each of its first 25 years and has produced three FIFA World Cup and eight Major League Soccer participants including former U.S. National Team member Alan Gordon. Eighteen of their former players have gone on to be inducted in the NJCAA Hall of Fame including Luciano, who was a member of Yavapai's first team in 1989 and first national champion team in 1990.
"I love having them up here because it first keeps me connected with the program," said Luciano. "We are able to showcase both men's and women's soccer in Northern Arizona and for our players it provides them the opportunity to watch the game so I am really happy that they are able to come up again."
The Lumberjacks officially kickoff their 2014 season on Aug. 15 at Arizona State and will return home Aug. 31 to host Valparaiso at Lumberjack Stadium in their first of nine home dates in 2014.
Season tickets in both the Reserved and General Admission seating areas for the upcoming season will be available for purchase on site on Saturday.
