Soccer Faces ASU in Exhibition Match

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. –After almost two weeks of training in Flagstaff, the Northern Arizona women's soccer team will travel down I-17 to face Arizona State in an exhibition match on Friday, Aug. 15 at 7p.m. This will be the second scrimmage for the Lumberjacks; last week NAU played in their annual Blue & Gold game where the squad was split. The Sun Devils are coming off a 9-8-2 season, finishing seventh in the PAC-12. The game will be played on the ASU West Campus which is located at 4781 West University Way South in Glendale, Ariz. There will be no live stats for this contest.

Looking forward to the 2014 campaign, head coach Andre Luciano enters his 14th year at the helm for Northern Arizona and returns a talented roster infused with young talent. The Lumberjacks bring back 13 letter winners along with six All-Big Sky Conference selections. Not only does Luciano bring back some major contributors from last season's squad but also brings in 11 freshmen eager to step onto the pitch and make an immediate impact on a team that looks to build off last year's second place finish in the Big Sky.

The Sun Devils bring back their top player back this season in junior forward Cali Farquharson and for the second straight season, Farquharson led the team in goals (10 – tied for the second-highest single-season total in program history) and points (22). ASU's top defender is junior McKenzie Berryhill who earned Second Team All-PAC-12 in 2013. Both Farquharson and Berryhill were invited to the U.S. U23 Training Camp this summer.

Luciano will lead a deep roster this season with a lot of veteran leadership on the defensive side of the ball and also a lot of young and up-and-coming talent on the offense. The Lumberjacks return six All-Big Sky Conference selections in Savannah Berry, Diane Buzzard, Cierra Gamble, Danny Muniz, Sarah Tarver and Haley Wingender. Gamble also returns as the Co-Golden Boot Award winner tallying 13 points during conference play. NAU will also add into the mix 11 incoming freshmen – four defenders, two midfielders and four forwards.
