FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona women's soccer team is back in the state of Arizona and will travel to Tucson on Thursday to face PAC-12 opponent Arizona. The Lumberjacks will then turn their attention to the much anticipated home opener against Valparaiso on Sunday, Aug. 31 at Lumberjack Stadium.
The Lumberjacks kicked off the 2014 season in Las Vegas, Nev. in the UNLV Rebel Classic where they faced UNLV and UC Riverside. Even though the Lumberjacks dropped both matches, freshman Adrian Nixt, redshirt sophomore Demi Schmieder and junior Haley Wingender were named to the All-Tournament Team for their exceptional play during the weekend. Wingender, a native of Nevada, scored the first two goals of the season for the Lumberjacks in her return home. NAU has one of the best home field advantages in the Big Sky Conference averaging 547 fans per contest last season with five wins at Lumberjack Stadium.
This will be the ninth meeting between UofA and Northern Arizona with the last meeting in 2012 in Flagstaff. The Lumberjacks have never defeated the Wildcats in the eight previous meetings. This will be just the second meeting all-time between Northern Arizona and Valparaiso. The first game between the schools was in 2003 and NAU took the 5-1 win.
Coach Luciano Quote of the Week
"We scheduled these PAC-12 games to prepare us for the rest of the season. Tony Amato has done a great job in a short time at UofA and has a very good attacking team so we have to be aware of their pace and athleticism. Our players are really excited to be playing at home finally; it has been over a month since they have played a game at Lumberjack Stadium. They love playing at their home venue and we hope we have a great crowd for our home opener."
UofA is coming off a 1-1 weekend in Florida with a 2-0 win against Florida International and a 2-1 loss to Florida Gulf Coast. The Wildcats were picked to finish No. 10 in the PAC-12 after a 9-7-4 record overall and 4-6-1 in the PAC-12. Three players have scored for the Wildcats this season in Alexandra Doller, Charlotte Brascia and Paige Crouch. Doller leads the team with three points this season.
Valparaiso was picked to finish fifth in the Horizon League preseason poll after an 8-7-3 record in 2013. The Crusaders return their top two goal scorers in Jenny Fassbinder and Rita Craven as well as Horizon League Freshman of the Year Morgan Manzke. In two games this season, the Crusaders have scored just one goal coming from Sarrah Ludwig. Goalkeeper Sydney Galvez-Daley was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week due to her 0.90 goals against average this past weekend.
