PHOENIX, Ariz. – In a hard fought battle, Northern Arizona women's soccer fell to Grand Canyon University in their first non-conference contest of the 2015 season. With a final score of 3-2 at Grand Canyon Soccer Field in Phoenix, Ariz., the all-time series record of the two squads moves to 3-1-0 in favor of NAU.
After an early goal from redshirt freshman Chantal Deroos in the seventh minute of the game, the Antelopes answered with a score from Madison Cox assisted by Kelsey Smith. This was Deroos' first career goal in front of a crowd of 2,565.
"I thought Grand Canyon created a fantastic environment and their players were up for it," said Lumberjack head coach Andre Luciano.
Senior forward Haley Wingender also connected on her first goal of the season with an assist from senior Ashlynn Curnow in the second half. Again, Grand Canyon answered, this time from forward Cassie Beckwith tying up the game at 2-2 in regulation play.
After nearly five minutes of overtime, GCU cashed in its only shot attempt of the period. Grand Canyon finished the game with 13 shots on net, while NAU ended with nine.
"I thought in the second half, we came out and controlled the play for the majority of the game, but they were opportunistic," Luciano said. "Our players fought and grinded and I'm proud of them for that."
The Lumberjacks open up their home stand against the University of Arizona on Friday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. as they look to snag their first win of the year.
