MILWAUKEE, Wis. – In the final game of the Marquette Invitational this afternoon (Sept. 13), Northern Arizona University women's soccer came out on top against the University of Loyola Chicago with a final score of 3-0. The Lumberjacks were able to bounce back after a loss to Marquette University on Friday, Sept. 11 and move to 1-1 on the weekend and 3-4-0 on the year.
"Our team was great about responding to Friday's loss," Head Coach Andre Luciano said. "I felt like we controlled the tempo of the game in the first half and they executed what we needed to."
The game was off to a hot start as NAU attempted two shots within the first four minutes of the match. On the third, sophomore forward Adrian Nixt connected on what would be her first of two goals in the game moving the score to 1-0. From five yards out, she was able to find the back of the net after applying pressure to one of Loyola's defenders forcing a turnover. Nixt is now second on the team in goals this season with three behind senior forward Haley Wingender who has already recorded five in seven games. Seven shots followed Nixt's goal after 30 minutes of play and the Lumberjacks finished the half with 13 total, five being on target.
"Marquette was a good opponent and we did a lot of good things on Friday," Nixt said. "But I thought we were able to execute a lot better in today's game."
On the defensive end, redshirt junior goalkeeper Natalie Gilbertson held off the Rambler offense with two saves on five shot attempts in the first half. Meghan Dickmann made her second appearance of the season and tallied 7 saves in the second half for the Lumberjacks.
The Lumberjacks started out the second half in a similar fashion to the first with another shot attempt from Nixt, but missed high, in the 46th minute. NAU wouldn't get their next shot off until the 72nd minute, but it was good for a goal from sophomore defender Missy Kettelkamp off a Wingender indirect kick giving the Lumberjacks a 2-0 lead. This was Kettelkamp's first career goal.
With just three minutes remaining, NAU wasn't quite done on the offensive end. Nixt nailed a header for her second goal of the afternoon moving the score to 3-0. The assist came from senior defender Ashlynn Curnow off a cross pass landing in the goalie box.
Senior midfielder Cierra Gamble, Wingender and Nixt all made the Marquette Invitational All-Tournament Team. Nixt was the lone sophomore to claim this award alongside 10 other juniors and seniors.
Luciano and his squad return home to Lumberjack Stadium next weekend against North Dakota State University on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 20 at noon against Robert Morris University. Both games will be televised on Fox Sports Arizona Plus as the Lumberjacks look to finish out their non-conference season on a high note.
