FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona University senior forward Haley Wingender was named the Big Sky Soccer Co-Offensive Player of the Week the conference office announced today Sept. 22, 2015. This is Wingender's second weekly honor of the season and third of her career.
In the 2015 Northern Arizona University Mountain Classic on Sept. 18 and Sept. 20, NAU finished 2-0 playing host to two new regional opponents in North Dakota State and Robert Morris University. On Friday, Sept. 18 NAU captured arguably their biggest comeback win of the season over the North Dakota State Bison in thrilling fashion with a final score of 4-3. The Lumberjacks were down 1-0 heading into the second half, but blasted four goals in the second period to seal the win.
Wingender played a part in both the tying and game winning goals. In the 74th minute, she hit sophomore forward Adrian Nixt with a cross pass on target to make the score 3-3. And with less than seven minutes to play, Wingender booted one on frame from the left corner, which was deflected by a NDSU player, to move the score to 4-3 in Northern Arizona's favor. Prior to Friday, NDSU was on a three-game winning streak with two straight overtime wins, one being over Big 12 foe Iowa State University.
Sunday's match also brought about significant contributions from Wingender, as she moved into the third place spot in program history for individual career goals at 26 alongside Lumberjack alumna Cee Cee Odorfer (2004-2008). She sparked the Lumberjacks' offense in the first 20 minutes nailing goal number one of the afternoon off a penalty kick. Five additional goals followed Wingender's, and she now has seven goals on the year heading into conference play which ties for second best among Big Sky players.
