FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Swimmers Chalene Dirks-Ryan and Emma Lowther and diver Kristy Ardavanis each won two events to lead the Blue team to a 60-44 win in the annual Blue vs Gold meet on Friday afternoon in Wall Aquatic Center. The meet was the second intersquad event of the 2011-12 season and the first competition for the NAU divers.
"Overall I thought we had pretty good races today," said head coach Andy Johns. "The best thing for me is that our returners are ahead of where they were last year at this time and our newcomers are getting some great experience. We've got some work to do but its good that we still have four weeks until our first dual meet."
The gold team began the meet well, taking the opening event, the 200 medley relay, with a time of 2 minutes, 01.35 seconds. Lowther would claim her first race of the day in the second event, winning the 200 freestyle, while Dirks-Ryan followed with a win in the 50 free.
The closest event of the day was the 200 butterfly, as Lowther edged fellow New Zealander Rachel Palmer by .14 seconds, winning in 2:21.79. Dirks-Ryan took the 100 free for her second win of the day, while other individual swimming winners were senior Kristin Jones (200 IM), junior Fi Connell (200 back), freshman Caitlin Wright (400 free) and sophomore Jordan Burnes (200 breast). The Blue team closed the swimming competition with a win in the 200 free relay.
On the diving board, Ardvanis opened with a winning total of 301.88 in the 3-meter competition with seniors Cassie Anderson and Holly Frost taking second and third, respectively. Ardavanis went on to win the 1-meter competition as well with a score of 296.70, with Frost taking second and Anderson finishing third. Freshman Kali Lents performed well in her first collegiate competition, finishing fourth in both events with scores of 243.61 (3-meter) and 245.93 (1-meter).
The squad will host its annual Alumni Meet on Oct. 21st before opening its dual season at home against Idaho on Nov. 5.
