FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – A season-opening meet with Arizona State in Sedona and three duals in Wall Aquatic Center highlight the 2012-13 NAU Swimming & Diving schedule announced by head coach Andy Johns on Monday. The squad will also face Pac-12 schools Arizona, Oregon State and Washington State and spend a week training and competing in Florida in preparation for the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships Feb. 27-Mar. 2.
"We're excited to have ASU coming up, which will be a great opportunity to get out in the community and start the competitive season off against a quality in-state opponent," said Johns. "Having Northern Colorado come out for the first time and continuing our rivalry with New Mexico State will be exciting, and having Colorado State come out in January should set us up well for being ready for the end of the year."
The meet with Arizona State will open the regular season following a pair of intersquad events in Wall Aquatic Center in the Pentathlon on Sept. 21 and the Blue vs Gold meet on Oct. 12. The Lumberjacks will host the Sun Devils on Oct. 13 at the West Sedona Community Pool with the meet beginning at 10 a.m. to be followed by a clinic with the staff and student-athletes from both teams with local club swimmers.
NAU opens its road slate at New Mexico on Oct. 20 before returning home to host Northern Colorado, who will be joining the WAC in swimming & diving this season, on Nov. 3. Following a road stretch through the rest of November the team will host WAC member New Mexico State on Dec. 1 followed by a week of training in Florida and a meet against Florida Atlantic, Northwestern, and Denver on Dec. 21.
"The main focus of going to Florida is sea level training," Johns said. "At the end of the week we will compete against three good teams, including Denver who is a new member of the WAC that will be right up there as a team to beat this year at conference."
The Lumberjacks will face Arizona and Oregon State in Tucson on Jan. 4 before closing their home schedule with Colorado State on Jan. 19. The divers will compete at Air Force the following week and the team will end its regular season at Arizona State on Feb. 2 ahead of the WAC Championships, where NAU will look to build on its second-place finish in 2012.
