DENVER, Colo. – After placing sixth among 23 divers on platform at the Arizona Diving Invite NAU junior Gwen Smithberg has been named the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Diver of the Week. The award is the first of Smithberg's career and the fourth won by the Lumberjacks in seven weeks this season.
"It feels great to be given the award and its humbling," Smithberg said. "It's good at this time of the season to boost on since this time of the season can be hard for a lot of us. It gives me motivation to keep going so I'm blessed."
In the platform competition on Sunday Smithberg scored 216.00 and was just .10 back of fifth place, finishing ahead of divers from Arizona, Cal, Stanford, Boise State, San Diego State, and others. Her score was just shy of her career-best of 217.10 which she achieved at the WAC Championships last season and was the fourth highest platform score in program history.
In the other events at the Arizona Diving Invite, Smithberg was the second highest NAU finisher on 1-meter with a total of 195.15 to place 34th overall and she also competed on 3-meter, scoring 180.40. She has already qualified this season for the NCAA Zone meet on 3-meter.
The Lumberjack swimmers and divers return to action hosting New Mexico State for a dual on Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. in Wall Aquatic Center.
