FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – NAU junior swimmer Rachel Palmer has been selected as a Capital One Academic All-District 8 Women's At-Large First Team selection. As a first team selection Palmer will be placed on a ballot for Capital One Academic All-America honors.
The Capital One Academic All-District Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Student-athletes from several women's sports, including swimming & diving, golf, and tennis, were eligible for the At-Large awards based on significant athletic and academic achievements. Gymnast Caitlin Kennedy of Southern Utah was the only other female Big Sky student-athlete to receive the honor.
Palmer has been among NAU's top performers both in the pool and in the classroom throughout her career as she holds a 3.96 cumulative GPA majoring in health sciences – public health with a minor in psychology. She is a three-time Academic All-WAC selection and a three-time Golden Eagle Scholar-Athlete award recipient as well as a two-time nominee for Academic All-District honors.
The Bucklands Beach, Auckland, New Zealand native is a two-time CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major All-American and is NAU's all-time record holder in the 200 butterfly, 800 freestyle relay, and the 400 medley relay. This year she won a WAC Championship in the 400 medley relay and was on the Lumberjack squad that finished second in the 800 free relay. She also placed fourth in the 400 IM with an NCAA 'B' time of 4 minutes, 18.36 seconds.
Palmer was named the NAU Female Athlete of the Year in 2012 after totaling three gold medals with three All-WAC first team honors and one second team honor at the 2012 WAC Championships. In three seasons she has totaled four WAC titles with five All-WAC first team honors and four second team honors while leading NAU to second place finishes at the conference meet in each of the last two seasons.
The Capital One Academic All-America At-Large teams will be announced on Thursday, June 6.
