DENVER, Colo. – Senior Gwen Smithberg was named the Western Athletic Conference's Diver of the Week on Tuesday after helping the Northern Arizona swimming & diving team to a victory at fellow WAC foe New Mexico State last Saturday. The weekly award is the fourth this season for the Lumberjacks from the conference office and the first of Smithberg's career.
"Gwen really did a good job of stepping up," said diving coach Nikki Huffman. "Two years ago, the boards were even worse and she had that in her head, but she overcame it and dove really well. It's nice to see our seniors leading the way and this is a great honor for her."
Smithberg opened the meet and got the Lumberjacks off to a great start by winning the day's first event on 3-meter. Her score of 271.87 secured her third 3-meter victory of the season and was more than 30 points better than the Aggies' top diver. The senior from Seattle, Wash. put NAU ahead on the scoreboard and the Lumberjacks never trailed en route to a 171-129 victory that improved their dual meet record to 4-1 this season. Smithberg also scored points for the Lumberjacks on the 1-meter board, placing fifth with a score of 230.17.
Smithberg adds to NAU's weekly awardees this season following sophomore Chelsea Jackson, who has received the WAC's Diver of the Week award twice, and senior Emma Lowther, who has one WAC Swimmer of the Week to her name.
The Lumberjacks will return to competition on Jan. 3 when they will take on Arizona and Oregon State in a double dual that will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
