DENVER, Colo. – The Northern Arizona swimming & diving team may have come up short to New Mexico last Saturday, but a pair of individual performances did not go unnoticed by the Western Athletic Conference office on Tuesday. Junior Alina Staffeldt and sophomore Christina Torrente were named the WAC Women's Swimmer and Diver of the Week respectively allowing NAU to sweep the weekly awards.
Only two dual meets into her junior season, Staffeldt picked up her second conference award of the season and third of her career. She won all three of her individual events against New Mexico, while tallying the only swimming wins for the 'Jacks against the Lobos. She posted winning times of 2:04.20 in the 200 butterfly, 53.09 in the 100 freestyle and 56.53 in the 100 butterfly to complete her perfect day.
Torrente meanwhile earned her first career Diver of the Week honor from the WAC. She took home the win on the 3-meter springboard with a score of 312.00 – the highest of her young career. The victory was her first dual meet win of her career as well. Torrente also placed fourth on 1-meter with a score of 277.28. Furthermore, both of her scores were qualifiers for the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships, as she was one of four Lumberjack divers to qualify last Saturday.
