DENVER, Colo. – In her final opportunity of the season, sophomore Tanya Kurach finally achieved her elusive first WAC Diver of the Week award on Tuesday as announced by the conference office. Kurach became the fourth Northern Arizona diver to receive weekly honors from the WAC this season.
Kurach shined the brightest among the Lumberjacks' exceptional team performance at the Air Force Diving Invitational last weekend with three top six finishes. She was the only diver in the entire conference to achieve the feat and was one of just three total divers to do so amongst a field of more than 65 total competitors.
She placed second on both 1-meter and 3-meter with scores of 288.10 and 311.30 respectively. In the 3-meter event, Kurach jumped two spots in the finals to improve upon her fourth place preliminary standing. The Saint Petersburg, Russia native also posted a season-best platform score of 207.30 to earn a sixth-place finish on the tower.
The first-year Lumberjack and Henderson State transfer has enjoyed a successful first season at NAU including a pair of dual meet wins against nationally ranked Arizona. Kurach placed eighth on 1-meter at the NCAA Division II National Championships last season and became the first Henderson State female diver to earn All-American honors.
She will eye to make a big splash at her first WAC Championships at the end of February along with the rest of her NAU teammates as the Lumberjacks take aim for their fourth consecutive conference title.
