Suhajda Named Big Sky Women’s Tennis Player of the Week


OGDEN, Utah – Northern Arizona junior Edit Suhajda has been named the Big Sky Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday. The award is the first of the season for Suhajda and the third of the year for Northern Arizona. Sacramento State junior Kiryl Harbatsiuk earned men's player of the week honors for the fourth time this season.

Playing at No. 1 singles, Suhajda led the Lumberjacks to a pair of Big Sky wins over Eastern Washington and Portland State, pushing NAU's conference record to 7-0 and setting up a Saturday date with Sacramento State for the Big Sky regular season title. After dropping a match on Friday to Washington State's No. 78 Elisabeth Fournier, Suhajda led NAU with wins at No. 1 on Saturday and Monday. She defeated Caitlin Bampton from Eastern Washington, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 and posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Portland State's Anya Dalkin as NAU remained undefeated in the Big Sky.

A two-time All-Big Sky first-team selection, Suhajda also teamed with freshman Malia Wahinepio in doubles for two conference wins. The duo picked up an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles against Eastern Washington and claimed an 8-3 win at No. 2 over Portland State.

The Budapest, Hungary native and her teammates will play for a regular season Big Sky championship on Saturday when they host No. 54 Sacramento State at 10 a.m. in Flagstaff Athletic Club East.

DID YOU KNOW…The Lumberjacks’ 3.16 cumulative GPA was the highest since department grades have been tracked starting in 1997 and marked the 11th semester in the last 12 overall the NAU student-athletes have recorded a 3.00 cumulative GPA.  Since 1998, NAU student athletes have earned a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher in 21 of the 23 semesters.
