Suhajda Earns First Big Sky Tennis Player of the Week Award


OGDEN, Utah – Northern Arizona senior Edit Suhajda has earned the first Big Sky women's tennis Player of the Week award for the 2011 season, the conference announced Wednesday. Suhajda, a three-time All-Big Sky first team selection who is currently ranked No. 20 in the ITA Mountain region, went 1-1 at No. 1 singles last week and led NAU to a win over UTEP. Eastern Washington's Fernando Mussolini won the men's tennis Player of the Week award.

After the Lumberjacks dropped their season-opening match at No. 49 Arizona on Friday, Suhajda led Northern Arizona to a 4-3 win over UTEP in Tucson on Saturday. The Budapest, Hungary native cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over UTEP's Martina Trierweiler and teamed with fellow senior Yumi Hasegawa for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles. Suhajda led NAU with a 13-6 overall singles record and a 7-1 Big Sky singles mark in 2010 en route to her third All-Big Sky first team selection in as many seasons at Northern Arizona.

The Lumberjacks will play three matches this weekend in Santa Barbara, Calif., beginning play on Friday at 10 a.m. against Cal State Bakersfield.

DID YOU KNOW...In the final 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings, the Lumberjacks were the top-ranked team in the Big Sky Conference, while ranking eighth among schools in the Football Championship Subdivision. NAU also finished ahead of seven Bowl Championship Subdivision teams including Washington State (Pac-10), North Carolina State (ACC), Rutgers (Big East), Pittsburgh (Big East), Mississippi State (SEC), Cincinnati (Big East) and Kansas State (Big 12).
