Women’s Tennis Drops Rain-Shortened 5-0 Match to UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – After a three-hour rain delay that washed away doubles play, UC Santa Barbara won all-five singles matches that were completed before rain resumed for a 5-0 win over Northern Arizona on a soggy Sunday afternoon in Santa Barbara. The Lumberjacks went 1-2 on their challenging California road trip to move to 2-3 overall while the Gauchos improved their season record to 1-1.

When play finally began, the teams went directly to singles play in hopes of completing as much play as possible. NAU senior Edit Suhajda dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to the Gauchos' Natalia Lozano at No. 1 while fellow senior Orsi Golovics forced a third-set tiebreak at No. 2 before following to UCSB's Jill Damion, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (3).

The Gauchos would record straight-set wins at No. 4, 5 and 6 to take a 5-0 lead while the No. 3 match moved to a third set. Lumberjack senior Yumi Hasegawa and UC Santa Barbara's Sofia Novak split the first-two sets, with Novak winning the first set, 6-3, and Hasegawa taking the second set, 7-6. Novak led the third-set tiebreak, 6-5, when the rain resumed and forced the conclusion of the match, leaving the No. 3 duel incomplete.

The Lumberjacks are off until Friday, February 11, when they will face their highest-ranked opponent of the season in a match at No. 21 Arizona State.
