OGDEN, Utah – Northern Arizona senior Orsi Golovics has been named as the Big Sky Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. The Szentendre, Hungary native went 2-1 at No. 2 singles last week and 1-1 at No. 1 doubles in three Lumberjack matches in Santa Barbara, Calif. The Lumberjacks have taken the first-two Big Sky women's tennis Player of the Week honors this season, as fellow senior Edit Suhajda earned the accolade last week. Montana's Carl Kuschke won the men's tennis Player of the Week award.
Golovics began her weekend last Friday with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles over Veronica Dimas of Cal State Bakersfield and teamed with Suhajda for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, leading the Lumberjacks to a 6-1 victory over the Roadrunners. On Saturday against Santa Clara, Golovics picked up another win at No. 2 singles in a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 triumph over Kelly Lamble. Golovics' only loss of the weekend came in a third-set tiebreaker against UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, as the NAU senior was outlasted by Jill Damion 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (3). Golovics is a three-time All-Big Sky selection and is leading the team this year with a 3-2 record at No. 2 singles.
The Lumberjacks are off this week before resuming play on Friday, February 11, at No. 21 Arizona State.
