Perez Claims Singles Win, Women’s Tennis Falls to No. 20 ASU, 6-1
TEMPE, Ariz. – Lumberjack sophomore Nicole Perez notched a singles win at No. 6 and the Northern Arizona doubles team of seniors Orsi Golovics and Edit Suhajda picked up a win at No. 1 doubles as No. 20 Arizona State topped NAU, 6-1, Friday afternoon in Tempe. The Lumberjacks, facing their highest ranked opponent of the season and three nationally ranked singles players, dropped to 2-4 on the season while the Sun Devils improved to 4-1.
Despite losing the doubles point, Northern Arizona was able to record an impressive win at No. 1. Golovics and Suhajda faced Arizona State's Jacqueline Cako and Micaela Hein, who are both ranked nationally as singles players, at the top doubles spot. The NAU pair was able to record an 8-7 (5) victory, though ASU claimed the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches to earn the opening point.
In singles, Perez matched up with Arizona State junior Sianna Simmons at the No. 6 position, rolling to a 6-2, 6-3 straight-set victory. The remainder of the singles matches, featuring nationally-ranked ASU players at No. 1, 2 and 4, were straight set wins for the home team. NAU senior Yumi Hasegawa was closest at No. 3, battling Sun Devil junior Michelle Brycki in a 6-2, 6-4 decision.
The Lumberjacks will remain in Tempe for a neutral site match on Saturday at noon against Pacific.
