Women’s Tennis Looks to Continue Win Streak at New Mexico
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – After sweeping three matches last weekend in Las Cruces, N.M., the Lumberjacks (5-5) return to our neighboring state for a Sunday match at New Mexico (5-5). The Lumberjacks ended a four-match losing streak in grand fashion last weekend, posting 7-0 sweeps of Seattle, Western New Mexico, and New Mexico State while not dropping any singles or doubles matches. Sunday's battle at New Mexico will be the Lumberjacks final match before opening their home and conference schedules next Saturday against Weber State.
Based on her effort in leading NAU last weekend with perfect records at No. 1 singles and doubles, senior Edit Suhajda was named Big Sky women's tennis Player of the Week. The award was the second of the season for Suhajda and the third such honor for NAU in 2011. All-six Lumberjack starters are riding winning streaks of at least three singles matches, while sophomore Malia Wahinepio has won four-straight matches at No. 4. Senior Yumi Hasegawa has teamed with Wahinepio for a team-leading 6-1 doubles record at No. 2, including four-straight doubles triumphs.
New Mexico enters Sunday's match at 5-5 after dropping matches to Oregon and Colorado in Boulder, Colo. last weekend. The Lobos are 4-2 at home, including a win over fellow Big Sky member Montana State. Freshman Michaela Bezdickova paces the team with a 6-4 record at No. 1, while seniors Ashley Bonner and Anya Villanueva have a team-best 6-4 mark at No. 1 doubles. The Lumberjacks are 1-15 all-time against New Mexico, with their lone win coming in 2009.
