FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona (5-6) will open Big Sky conference play in its home opener on Saturday at 9 a.m. in Flagstaff Athletic Club East against Weber State (3-3, 2-0 BSC). The Lumberjacks are the only team in the Big Sky that has not yet played a conference match. Saturday's dual will open a doubleheader with the NAU men's tennis team, which will host Portland State at 2 p.m.
NAU had a three-match winning streak snapped last weekend against New Mexico. Sophomore Malia Wahinepio carries a five-match winning streak and a 7-4 overall singles record at No. 4 into play on Saturday, while fellow sophomore Nicole Perez has notched four-straight singles wins. All-three NAU doubles teams have played well recently, with Wahinepio and senior Yumi Hasegawa leading the team with a 6-2 season mark. Seniors Orsi Golovics and Edit Suhajda have a 5-3 record at No. 1 doubles, while Perez and senior Aimee Oki have won four-straight doubles matches at No. 3.
Weber State has played just six matches thus far and currently stands at 3-3 with a dual scheduled for Friday at Grand Canyon. The Wildcats have home Big Sky victories over Portland State and Eastern Washington and also defeated Idaho State in a match that was not counted towards their conference record. Sophomore transfer Naseem Eslami leads the team at No. 1 singles and doubles. NAU has faced Weber State more times than any other opponent in program history, with the Wildcats holding a 22-13 all-time advantage.
