LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Freshman Hannah Stone advanced to the round of 32 at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships following two impressive straight set victories on Wednesday. Stone defeated Kaley Schultz of Colorado State, 6-4, 7-6 in the first round of action and then knocked off Manon de Lanlay of the host UNLV in the second round by a score of 6-1, 6-2.
Junior Nicole Perez joined Stone in the second round of the main draw following her 6-4, 6-1 victory over Northern Colorado's Jennifer Whateley, but fell in the second round 6-1, 6-1 to Nevada's Michelle Okhremchuk, the fourth-seeded player in the tournament.
The Northern Arizona women's tennis team also was represented in Las Vegas by juniors Ghizelene Doballah and Malia Wahinepio, but both were knocked out of the main draw in the first round. Doballah was defeated by Morgan Anderson of BYU, 6-3, 6-1, while Wahinepio fell to Brittiny Moore of Weber State in three sets, despite taking the first set, 2-6, 7-5, 6-0.
Stone will look to continue her path through the singles main draw when she takes on fifth-seeded Michaela Bezdickova of New Mexico in the third round tomorrow. Aside from the third round of singles play in the main draw, Day 2 of the ITA Mountain Regional Championships will feature the first round of consolation singles, as well as the first and second rounds of the doubles main draw. Wahinepio and Perez will be paired together, while Stone and Doballah make up the second Lumberjack duo.
