LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team had mixed results on the second day of the ITA Mountain Regional Championship on Thursday, going 1-2 in both singles and doubles play. Freshman Hannah Stone, who was the lone Lumberjack to advance to the third round of the singles main draw after Wednesday's play, fell to New Mexico's Michaela Bezdickova, the fifth-seeded player in the draw, 6-0, 6-0 in Thursday's third round.
Senior Malia Wahinepio garnered the team's only singles win of the day, defeating Megan Price of BYU, 2-6, 6-2, 10-6 in the first round of the consolation draw. In an additional match added to play on Thursday, junior Ghizelene Doballah was beaten by BYU's Lisa Waldron, 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles play, Stone paired with Doballah to advance past the first round of the main draw, bouncing Utah State's Sadi Wilkins and Kimberly Watts, 9-7. Unfortunately, they ran into the doubles second-seeded pair, UNLV's Lucia Batta and Aleksandra Josifoska and were handed a 8-3 loss in the following round. The Lumberjacks other doubles team consisting of Wahinepio and junior Nicole Perez were defeated in the first round by Bezdickova and Alyssa Caffey of New Mexico, 8-5.
The ITA Mountain Regional Championship carries on Friday with more singles play in the main draw, as well as the second round of consolation singles. The first round of consolation doubles will also be played tomorrow, as will the third round of the main draw.
