CHENEY, Wash. – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team clinched a spot in the Big Sky Championship tournament with its 5-1 victory over Eastern Washington on Sunday to improve its conference record to 6-1 this season. The Lumberjacks secured the victory by taking five of the six singles matches and snapped their three-match losing streak in the process in pushing their overall record to 8-12.
Having skipped doubles play, the Lumberjacks relied on their conference singles supremacy to lock up the victory on Sunday. Juniors Ghizelene Doballah and Malia Wahinepio, as well as freshman Johanna Vang, all earned their sixth conference singles victory in seven matches with straight set victories at the No. 1, 3 and 4 spots respectively. Freshman Hannah Stone also won for the Lumberjacks, winning at No. 2, while junior Alice Pacaut provided NAU with its final win at No. 6.
While Doballah, Wahinepio and Vang lead the team with an impressive 6-1 conference mark, Stone is right behind with a 5-2 record against Big Sky opponents. Pacaut also owns a winning conference record with her victory on Sunday, improving to 4-3 in the Big Sky, while notching her team-leading tenth overall singles win.
As a team the Lumberjacks are 31-11 in Big Sky singles play, big reason they head into the final week of the regular season in second place in the conference standings. NAU owns the tiebreak edge over Montana, Northern Colorado and Montana State by virtue of victories over their conference foes should the situation arise.
NAU concludes the regular season at Portland State on Saturday at 1 p.m. before they battle Seattle the following day.
