Women's Tennis Beats UND, 6-1, For Fourth Straight Victory

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team won for the fourth consecutive match and recorded its eighth-consecutive double-digit win season dating back to 2006 on Saturday via its 6-1 triumph over North Dakota in Grand Forks. The team equaled its win total from a year ago with seven matches remaining in the regular season as the Lumberjacks improved to 10-8 overall and 3-1 within the conference.

As they had done in their previous three victories during their current win streak, the Lumberjacks once again set the tone in the match with a sweep of doubles play to begin Saturday's contest. Senior Alice Pacaut and junior Tatum Rochin, playing as a doubles pair for the first time this spring, gave NAU a spark as play commenced with an 8-0 victory at No. 3 over Mindy Lawrence and Megan Sween. The Lumberjacks' sophomore tandem of Hannah Stone and Johanna Vang wrapped up the doubles point with an 8-4 win at No. 1 before seniors Ghizelene Doballah and Nicole Perez finished the sweep with their fourth consecutive win at No. 2. With their three wins on Saturday, the Lumberjacks moved to 11-0 in doubles during their four-match win streak.

Perez put NAU ahead 2-0 in the match with her second 6-0, 6-0 singles win – and third straight overall – at No. 5. Pacaut and Rochin followed Perez's lead with straight-set wins of their own to seal up the Lumberjacks' tenth win of the season. North Dakota's Callie Ronkowski was the only player to get in the way of NAU's fourth shutout in a row when she pulled off a 6-2, 6-1 win over Doballah at No. 2. Stone and Vang finished the day with wins as the Lumberjacks successfully completed a 2-0 weekend in their second to final road trip of the spring.

Between both singles and doubles competition, the Lumberjacks have won 34 of 35 matches over the course of their last four team matches. As NAU returns home for a three-match homestand over the next week, six players will carry a personal win streak of at least three matches. Perez, at a team-best 12-6, has won her last five matches while Pacaut and Stone have won their last four. Vang and senior Malia Wahinepio, who sat out Saturday's match, have won three in a row while Rochin has filled in the Lumberjack lineup with perfection, as she is 5-0 this season.

The Lumberjacks are back in Flagstaff and will host Big Sky foes Eastern Washington and Idaho State next Friday and Saturday, March 29 and 30, respectively. Both matches are scheduled for a 2 p.m. start at Continental Country Club and will be a part of five consecutive home dates between the two NAU tennis programs from March 28-April 1, capped off by the Lumberjack women's final match of their three-match homestand versus Texas-Pan American.
