LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Northern Arizona University women's tennis team rounded out its first fall showing at the University of Las Vegas, Nevada Invitational this past weekend, Sept. 23-25. Lumberjacks Marta Lewandowska, Hanneke Lodewijks, Blanka Szavay and freshman Brandy Walker all competed over the three-day stretch, combining for six singles wins and three doubles wins overall.
Lewandowska, now in her senior season, came up with two singles wins over Fresno State's Abbey Watanabe and UNLV's Mercedes Lopez. While she ousted Watanabe in straight sets in her first match of the weekend, Lopez took her to three but Lewandowska pulled out the win 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Walker, in her first time in the navy and gold, also picked up a pair of singles wins in the No. 5 draw. She also beat Lopez – 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 – and turned around to beat University of South Alabama's Alina Zolotareva 6-7, 6-4, 6-4. In the final round, Walker fell to UNLV's Jovana Kenic for a third place finish.
In doubles, Lewandowska and Walker were paired together finishing 2-1. The tandem notched wins over Long Beach State University and UNLV before falling to the No. 33 ranked Gabby Smith and Zoe Katz from the University of Southern California. Lodewijks and Szavay picked up the final of the doubles wins in their first match versus Fresno State, ousting Olivia Noble and Georgia Lawson 8-6.
The Lumberjacks' second fall invite is set for Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at the University of Arizona.
