FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona University women's tennis team will start the 2017 season on the road to face Arizona State and UC Davis. The weekend starts Friday, Jan. 20 against Arizona State and ends Saturday, Jan. 21 against UC Davis. Both matches will be played at ASU.
The Lumberjacks are coming off an incredible fall season, and looking for a conference title this year. A lot is to be expected from this years squad after ranking No. 2 in the preseason poll. Five starters are returning for NAU including Blanka Szavay, who finished last season 16-8 in singles, Eirene Granville, who finished 13-5, and doubles pair Hanneke Lodewijks and Szavay who finished with 14 wins.
The Lumberjacks finished 2016 as regular season champions with an 18-8 overall record and 10-1 in Big Sky Conference play.
As of Jan. 4, freshman Chiara Tomasetti sits at No. 18 in the Mountain Region singles rankings.

The ASU Women's Tennis team opened their season at the Michigan Invitational against No. 14 Michigan, Tennessee and DePaul. The No. 22 Sun Devils include sophomore Sammi Hampton, who is No. 49 in singles, senior Kassidy Jump, who is No. 63 in singles and No. 36 doubles team freshman Savannah Slaysman and junior Kelley Anderson. The last time Arizona State took on NAU was at the Thunderbird Invitational where they hosted and won the tournament.

UC Davis will also start their season this weekend, against NAU Saturday and the Sun Devils Sunday. This will be the fourth time the Aggies will compete against the Lumberjacks in their season opener. The Aggies return seven athletes this season after going 10-12 overall and 2-6 in the Big West Conference.
Following this weekend, the Lumberjacks will head to Tucson, Ariz. to take on Arizona Jan. 28. Match time versus the Wildcats is set for 10 a.m Saturday. This will be the only match for the Lumberjacks next weekend. Admission is free for all who attend.
Northern Arizona competed in five fall tournaments at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, University of Arizona, ITA Mountain Regionals in Albuquerque, N.M., Arizona State University and Grand Canyon University. All seven Lumberjacks played this fall, with standout seniors Marta Lewandowska and Hailey Rochin and freshman Tomasetti who had incredible preseasons. To start the fall, redshirt junior Szavay paired with sophomore Lodewijks for a doubles win in their first match at the UNLV Invitational. Lewandowska came up with two singles wins and finished 2-1 in doubles with freshman Brandy Walker. Walker picked up a third-place finish in singles for the first time as a Lumberjack in that tournament. At Arizona, the Lumberjacks posted a 9-7 singles record and a notable 7-1 doubles record, including two singles wins for Lewandowska, Tomasetti and sophomore Granville. The Lumberjacks finished strong with Tomasetti qualifying for the Round 16 in singles at the ITA Mountain Regionals.
