NAU Volleyball Wraps Up Camp with Scrimmage on Saturday
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – With its season opener just a week away, the Northern Arizona volleyball team will hold an open scrimmage on Saturday night at 6 p.m. at the Rolle Activity Center, providing fans with their first look at their 2013 Lumberjack volleyball squad. The scrimmage is free for all fans to attend.
"We have a really exciting team and they play hard," said head coach Ken Murphy. "Those that come out will enjoy watching how hard they work. I think it's a sneak preview for the fans for the (Fiesta Bowl) tournament in two weeks. The tournament is going to be high-level and we feel like if we can build in the next weeks from where we are right now, we're going to play really great volleyball."
The Lumberjacks have been hard at work with two-a-day practices nearly every day for the last two weeks in preparation of their opening tournament next Friday and Saturday at the William & Mary Invitational. With a new coaching staff, just three returning starters and five newcomers, the fall camp has provided the team with ample opportunity to grow as a unit, something that Murphy believes has been accomplished thus far.
"As time has gone on, it's become more and more obvious what our strengths are and who our leaders are going to be," Murphy said. "We definitely want to use this scrimmage as one last test to see our personality as a team and the things we've learned. Some players have elevated and we'll get to see if the players that we think will make the biggest impact for us will do that in a real game situation."
