FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – With the NCAA Pre Nationals meet just one week away, eight members of the Northern Arizona cross country teams will head to Tempe, Ariz., to compete in the Grand Canyon University/ Southwestern College Invite. Both races will take place from Evelyn Hallman Park Saturday morning, with the women beginning at 7:45 a.m. PDT, and the men following at 8:45.
"This weekend's meet is very important for the eight that will be racing," Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Eric Heins said. "It is a chance for them to still keep that competitive fire alive even though they won't be racing at Pre-Nats. For Rochelle Kanuho, it will be a good rust-buster before she heads to Terre Haute next weekend."
Saturday's race for Kanuho will be her first cross country meet in an NAU uniform. After graduating from Coconino High School in 2008, the redshirt sophomore has been working with the team for the past two seasons and will have her chance to make an impact on the squad.
This weekend's race will also allow the young women's team to gain more experience as the season grows. Freshmen Emily Bartz, Carissa Gwerder and Alexa Kearns will all take to the course for Lumberjacks.
The men's team will feature senior Kam Holbrook, sophomores Myles Kloer and Joe Withers and freshman Daniel Filipcik. It will be the second race of the season for both Holbrook and Kloer as the duo both competed at the Aztec Invite from San Diego, Calif. Both Filipcik and Withers will be seeing action for the fourth time this year.
