OGDEN, Utah - After recording a sixth-place overall finish at the George Kyte Classic Saturday in Flagstaff, Ariz., NAU's Rochelle Kanuho was honored as the Big Sky Cross Country Female Athlete of the Week. Kanuho, a native of Flagstaff, received the honor for the first time in her career with the Lumberjacks.
"I'm happy with how the race went," said Kanuho, a graduate of Coconino High School. "Being from Flagstaff, I like racing at home."
Kanuho began her second season competing for the Lumberjacks after finishing with an All-Conference honor at the 2010 Big Sky Championships and a 28th place finish at last year's NCAA Mountain Region Championships. This past weekend she led the NAU women to a third place finish in their only home meet of the season.
"This is a great honor for Rochelle to receive, especially considering she earned it after racing on her home course," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Eric Heins. "She ran really well this weekend and I'm looking forward to watching her build on it the rest of the season."
The Lumberjacks will be back in action Sept. 18 in Tucson for the Dave Murray Invitational.
