FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Northern Arizona men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Tucson, Ariz. this Friday to compete in the Dave Murray Invitational. The meet, held at the Dell Urich Golf Course, will be the Lumberjacks' first road test of the season.
"This is an early season meet that will give a lot of our runners a chance to make a play for the top seven," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Eric Heins. "Our coaching staff is excited to see who will step up and complete our team going into the bigger meets later this season."
The Lumberjacks will face in-state competitors Arizona and Arizona State for the second meet in a row. Two weeks ago, at the George Kyte Classic in Flagstaff, NAU's teams measured up well with its two rival schools, with each posting top-three finishes.
The NAU women will be led once again by senior Haley Lawrence and junior Rochelle Kanuho. The pair anchored the third-place women's team at George Kyte, and Kanuho, a Flagstaff native, earned Big Sky Cross Country Female Athlete of the Week honors for her sixth-place overall finish.
Also running for the first time in uniform for the Lumberjack women will be international newcomers Agnes Laurent, a junior from Belgium, and freshman Caroline Hogardh of Sweden.
"Having Agnes and Caroline running for us this year should be a huge shot in the arm," said Heins. "I'm really looking forward to seeing our new recruits perform in the next few meets."
The men's lineup for this weekend's meet features senior John Yatsko and sophomore Daniel Filipcik, both of whom were part of the second-place men's team from the home meet. Also running in his first competition for the Lumberjacks will be Chris Ganem, a freshman from Castle Rock, Colo.
