OGDEN, Utah - Northern Arizona University's Diego Estrada was awarded his second Cross Country Athlete of the Week honor of the season, the Big Sky Conference announced Tuesday. Estrada placed third at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational on Friday, a meet that featured 20 of the nation's top 30 teams.
"Diego had a good race, despite a headwind that slowed him down a bit toward the end," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Eric Heins. "He still ran strong, and overall he was satisfied with his finish."
Estrada has performed well in both meets in which he has competed this season. His other meet appearance at the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree on Oct. 1 resulted in an individual title for the native from Salinas, Calif.
With the Big Sky Conference Championships coming up in two weeks, Estrada has been priming himself for the postseason over the past several weeks, and looks to lead his team to the podium for the fifth-consecutive year at the conference event.
"Training [up to this point] has been a lot of recovery and a quick workout here and there to get ready for the next race," said Estrada. "It's time to transition into race pace type training to prepare for conference and nationals."
