OGDEN, Utah – Two Northern Arizona University cross country athletes were selected as Big Sky Conference Athletes of the Week today for their performances over the weekend.
Junior Matt McElroy was selected as the men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week after finishing first at the George Kyte Classic on Saturday, leading NAU to a first place team finish. McElroy's time of 24:45.3 set a new course record at Buffalo Park.
"During the last mile coach said 'you have to go now' and I went with a mile left and closed it pretty quickly in the last 400 (meters)," McElroy said after the race. "The last 100 (meters) felt really good with the crowd uplifting me."
Sophomore Melanie Townsend was selected as the women's Cross Country Co-Athlete of the Week, sharing the award with Weber State's Kelsey Braithwaite. Townsend finished third at the George Kyte Classic on Saturday with a time of 17:12.4, helping the Lumberjacks to a second place team finish.
"The goal was to go out there and run with the team and we did that really well," said Townsend shortly after crossing the finish line.
