Alan Berrios enters the 2025 season with a 22-15-13 record at the helm of the NAU Soccer program, alongside a 61-59-20 overall head coaching record. Berrios, who took over as interim head coach midway through the 2022 season, was officially named the head coach of the Lumberjacks in December 2022.
In Berrios' second full season in 2024, he coached four players to All-Big Sky honors, including Haylee Phoenix on the all-conference first team. Phoenix also earned the Big Sky's Golden Boot award, given to the player with the most goals scored in conference play. NAU qualified for the Big Sky Tournament by winning its final two games of the regular season on the road, marking the Lumberjacks' third consecutive conference tournament appearance under Berrios.
Berrios led the 'Jacks to an 11-6-3 record in his first official season as head coach 2023. The 11 victories were the program's most since 2014 and Berrios coached seven players to the all-conference team, with Allie Larsen and Maddie Shafer earning a spot on the first team. Larsen also became the first Lumberjack to receive Big Sky Defensive MVP honors since 2010. Four players earned All-Tournament Team honors after NAU advanced to the Big Sky Championship match. The 2023 season also saw NAU secure its first Power-5 victory since 2001 with a 3-2 win over Oregon in Flagstaff.
Berrios took over as interim head coach on Sept. 23, 2022 and guided NAU to a 7-2-4 record. The Lumberjacks won their final seven regular season matches to claim the Big Sky regular season title before they notched a pair of victories in penalty kicks to win the conference tournament championship. Under Berrios, who was named the Big Sky Coach of the Year, NAU made history by winning both the Big Sky regular season and tournament championships in the same season for the first time in program history. As a result, the Lumberjacks earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in program history and first since 2014.
The 2021 season marked Berrios' return to NAU as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator after spending the 2020 season at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fla. He guided the Fire to a 17-2-1 record, winning the Sun Conference regular season title and tournament title. During the 2020 season, Berrios' squad beat the No. 1 team in the country twice and earned an automatic berth to the NAIA National Championships, where they reached the quarterfinals. The Fire were ranked nationally in the top 10 all season long and went into the national tournament as the No. 2 team in the country.
Berrios first joined the NAU coaching staff in the spring of 2019 and served as an assistant coach before departing for Southeastern. The season prior, he served as an assistant coach at Dixie State (now Utah Tech), as an assistant coach and helped guide the program to the 2018 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal. During his time at Dixie State, he was in charge of recruiting and the defensive backline.
Berrios spent three seasons (2015-17) as the women’s soccer head coach at Arizona Christian University, and was simultaneously the men’s coach the first two seasons. He left as the winningest coach in the school’s 10-year NAIA history, turning around a program that had only won 14 Golden State Athletic Conference games in its previous six years, to qualifying for the GSAC Tournament for the first time in program history in 2017. On the men’s side, the Firestorm had the highest team GPA in the GSAC in 2015 and seven players earned Daktronics Scholar-Athlete recognition.
Prior to his time at ACU, Berrios spent four years as an assistant coach for the University of Tampa women’s soccer team from 2010-14. During his tenure at Tampa, the Spartans produced a record of 59-18-12. In 2011, the Spartans won the Sunshine State Conference Tournament Championship and NCAA Regional Championship before bowing out in the NCAA Elite Eight. Tampa advanced to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16 and in 2013, the Spartans advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA South Regional.
Before coaching at Tampa, Berrios served as the Director of Soccer Operations for the University of South Florida women’s team in 2009. During his only season with the Bulls, South Florida advanced to its first-ever NCAA Tournament in 2010 defeating Auburn before falling to Florida State in the second round.
Berrios also has extensive club coaching experience experience on both the east and west coasts. On the club circuit in Florida, Berrios was the head coach and staff coach of Brandon FC/West Florida Flames from 2002-13. He also spent time with Tampa Bay United from 2013-14. In Arizona, he spent coached the CCV Stars Soccer Club (2014-16) with RSL-AZ/Utah Royals, formerly Sereno Soccer Club, from 2016-18.
He and his wife, Suzi, have four adult children. All live in the Tampa Bay Area.
Berrios graduated from Southern New Hampshire University with a BA in General Studies.
