McNeill, Pohl Named Big Sky Athletes of the Week

OGDEN, Utah- The Big Sky Conference has announced its Cross Country Athletes of the Week for races ran from October 13th-October 19th. Northern Arizona's David McNeill was named the men's Athlete of the Week, along with fellow Lumberjack Veronica Pohl who was named women's Athlete of the Week.

McNeill, a sophomore, took second in the Men's 8000 Meter Blue Race at Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind., Saturday. His time of 23:30.7 was just .6 seconds behind Alabama's Tyson David, and ahead of 274 other racers. The three-time 2007 All-American paced the Lumberjacks to a second place team finish with 113 total points.

Pohl earns her third Big Sky honor this season after leading the Northern Arizona women's cross country team to a 10th place finish at Pre-Nationals Saturday. Pohl finished eighth individually in the field of 281 national runners, with her time of 20:36.6 in the Women's 6000 Meter White Race.

This week's regional and national ranking also saw some movement from the Lumberjacks after Pre-Nationals.

The men's team moves up to the top spot in the Mountain Region, overtaking Colorado who had held the honor in the season's four previous polls. The NAU men also jump from 16th last week, up to No. 8 in Tuesday's national poll.

The women's team slipped in both rankings, going from second to fourth in the Mountain Region, and No. 22 to No. 29 in the nation.

The teams will be off this weekend before squaring off against the conference at the Big Sky Championships at Portland State on November 1.
