Volleyball's Stowers and Sullivan Earn Big Sky All-Conference and Individual Awards
/ November 27, 2008
PORTLAND, Ore. – Northern
Arizona senior libero Brittany Stowers and freshman outside hitter
Lexi Sullivan both earned significant postseason honors by the Big
Sky Conference, as Stowers was named All-Big Sky First Team as well
as Libero of the Year, and Sullivan was named Big Sky Freshman of
the Year as well as All-Big Sky Honorable Mention.
Stowers, who has now completed her eligibility at NAU, was honored
by the Big Sky all three seasons that she played for the
Lumberjacks. Her first team honor marks the first time that a
libero has been named to the first team in the Big Sky. She earned
honorable mention honors as a junior, and was the Big Sky Newcomer
of the Year as a sophomore transfer.
With 6.32 digs per set, Stowers finished her season ranked second
in NCAA Division I. She easily led the conference in that category.
Stowers completed her NAU career with 1,294 digs to rank second
all-time, despite not playing her freshman season with the
Lumberjacks. Added to her total digs at UTEP, Stowers tallied 1,953
digs in her career. Her total of 581 digs this season is the most
all-time in a single season at NAU, breaking her own record of 484
from 2007.
Sullivan averaged 4.13 kills per set for the season which ranks
26th in the nation. She is the only freshman to even rank in the
top 50 in Division I, and also led the Big Sky. Sullivan recorded
10 or more kills in all but one of NAU's 26 matches this season,
and recorded a season-high 31 against Weber State on Nov. 13.
The volleyball team finished the season with an overall record of
15-10, its best record since 2001. To see the complete
