Former NAU Assistants Faceoff in NFL Playoffs
/ December 31, 2008
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Over 20
years ago, Brad Childress and Andy Reid were working under Larry
Kentera at Northern Arizona University. On Sunday, they will face
off in the NFL Wild Card round with Childress's Minnesota
Vikings hosting Reid's Philadelphia Eagles.
Childress coached on the Northern Arizona staff with Reid in 1986,
along with Eagles assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Marty
Mornhinweg in 1988, and with Eagles TE coach Tom Melvin from
1986-87. Childress was offensive coordinator at Northern Arizona
when Reid was hired by the school as an assistant coach.
Prior to taking over the Vikings, Childress spent seven seasons as
an assistant under Reid before taking the Vikings' head coaching
job in 2005. Childress' last four seasons in Philadelphia were
spent as the team's offensive coordinator.
"I don't particularly relish playing those guys just from a
personal standpoint," Childress said Monday. "He will give it his
best shot and we will give it our best shot."
The Eagles clinched a playoff berth by defeating the Dallas Cowboys
44-6. The Vikings won the NFC North title when they beat the Giants
20-19 on a last-second field goal by Ryan Longwell.
Childress and Reid are among five former NAU assistants to have led
NFL franchises as head coaches, joining former head coaches Mike
Shanahan (Denver), Bill Callahan (Oakland) and Mornhinweg
(Detroit).
Minnesota assistants Darrell Bevell (NAU Player, 1989), Jeff
Imamura (NAU Assistant, 2000-02), Derek Mason (NAU Player, 1987-91)
and Pat Morris (NAU Assistant, 1978) also have connections to the
Mountain campus.
