Football Posts Big Win in Home Opener
/ September 06, 2008
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The
Northern Arizona football team recorded a school-record 752 yards
in a 68-10 win over New Mexico Highlands Saturday in the Walkup
Skydome. The Lumberjacks won their home opener for the 16th
consecutive time, improving to 1-1 on the season.
“I was pleased with the effort,” said Head Coach Jerome
Souers. “We had a few big plays pop. We have known that about
our team but we have not seen it. It was good to see. But we are
not about stats. We are about coming out and playing well and
getting a win.”
New Mexico Highlands, a Division II opponent from Las Vegas, Nev.,
dropped to 0-2.
NAU compiled 405 yards passing with three quarterbacks combining to
complete 21-of-33 attempts for five touchdowns. Senior Lance
Kriesen went 7-for-10 for 125 yards and two touchdowns, while
sophomore Michael Herrick had 210 passing yards on a 10-for-17
night with two touchdowns. Junior Corey Slater added 70 yards and a
touchdown.
The rushing attack gained 347 yards with three players posting
impressive numbers. Junior Alex Henderson gained 120 yards with two
touchdowns (6, 24) in the first half. Derrick Jackson added 118
yards on seven carries, including a 78-yard run in the fourth
quarter that completed the scoring. True freshman Deonte Williams
added 87 yards and a touchdown in the second half.
The defense allowed just three points on the night with the only
score by New Mexico Highlands coming on a 100-yard kickoff return
by Lavaugh Macon in the fourth quarter. It was the first 100-yard
kickoff return by an opponent since 1994 in the Walkup Skydome.
“Our defense had something to prove after last week,”
said Souers, referring to the loss at Arizona State. “Some of
our quickness at the line of scrimmage was tough for them at the
start of the game. They made some adjustments. But it certainly
impacted the early part of the game.”
Sophomore Anthony Llanos had a big game with seven tackles with
five solos and 2.5 quarterback sacks and a pass deflection. The
Cowboys were held to only 165 yards of total offense.
NAU scored first on a 31-yard pass from Kriesien to Skyler Moore
for a 7-0 lead. After a 25-yard field goal by Greg Rivera pulled
the Cowboys within 7-3, the Lumberjacks scored the next 54 points
in the game.
Junior wide receiver Conrad Meadows had five receptions for 134
yards and two touchdowns (29, 67), while junior Curt Sweeney added
five catches for 77 yards and a 32-yards touchdown.
Kicker Robbie Dehaze helped the scoring effort with nine
extra-points and a 25-yard field goal, surpassing Micky
Penaflor's career scoring mark in the game.
NAU has a bye week this week before completing non-conference play
at Southern Utah on Sept. 20.
