Volleyball's Win Streak Snapped by Portland State
Women's Volleyball / October 17, 2009
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern
Arizona volleyball's upset weekend was halted with a 3-0 loss
to Portland State on Saturday night at the Rolle Activity Center.
After defeating first place Eastern Washington on Thursday, the
Lumberjacks were downed by scores of 25-22, 25-14, and 25-20.
“We didn't come out as fired up as we did on
Thursday,” said freshman outside hitter Jen Wilson. “We
almost had the third game, but couldn't get that one win
tonight.”
NAU (6-11, 3-5 BSC) played the Vikings tough early on and held the
lead for the first half of set one; however, Portland State (12-7,
6-2 BSC) answered behind the strong play of Erica Jepsen and
Whitney Phillips who combined for nine kills in the opening
set.
Portland State hit well throughout the match and exploded in the
second set hitting .696. Down 2-0, the Lumberjacks fought back in
the final set hitting .286 as a team, but the Vikings were
ultimately too much to handle and closed the match with a 3-0
sweep.
“We wanted to come out and take this game and really shake up
conference,” Wilson said. “Overall we are happy with
the weekend, but we didn't play like we should have
tonight.”
The Lumberjacks will look to rebound in their only match next week
against Sacramento State (12-9, 3-3 BSC) on Thursday, October 22.
NAU lost at Sacramento State 3-1 in their first meeting this fall.
The match is schedule for a 7:05 p.m. start at the Rolle Activity
Center.
“We have to come out with as much energy as we did against
Eastern Washington and really show the conference we are not the
team that was ranked seventh in the preseason,” said Wilson
in regards to the rest of the conference season. “We have to
come out and do it.”
