LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Northern Arizona swimming and diving finished 1-1 in a double-dual meet against New Mexico State and Northern Colorado on Saturday at the NMSU Swimming and Diving Complex. The Lumberjacks defeated Northern Colorado 224-75 and narrowly lost to New Mexico State 152-147.

NAU (1-1) racked up a number of top finishes in its first competition of the 2009-10 season. Freshman Fiona Connell won all three of her individual events, a list which included the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke, and 200 individual medley.

Sophomore Kristin Jones and senior Rachael Foe also turned in quality swims in their respective races. Jones won the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:37.84, and finished third in the 500 freestyle as well. Foe swam a 57.44 in the 100 butterfly and picked up first place honors. She also finished second in the 50 freestyle.

The Lumberjack posted brilliant performances in the diving competition with junior Taryn Harris taking first place at the 1-meter and 3-meter. Harris won the 1-meter with a score of 261.75 and the 3-meter with 272.95 points.

NAU placed divers in the top three positions in the 3-meter with junior Lana Christensen and freshman Kristy Ardavanis finishing second and third, respectively. Christensen finished fifth in the 1-meter and Ardavanis placed sixth.

The Lumberjacks moved to 6-0 all-time against Northern Colorado. After 20 consecutive losses to NAU, New Mexico State has recorded three wins in a row and now sits at 3-20 all-time against the Lumberjacks.
