latest road trip against the Lobos. NAU then will play its first
home games of the year hosting Belmont, Oregon State and Siena
during the Lumberjacks' annual Thanksgiving Classic.
THIS WEEK: NEW MEXICO
Northern Arizona women's basketball will travel to Albuquerque, N.
M., to play the New Mexico Lobos on Tuesday at 7 p.m. New Mexico is
2-1 this year with wins at home against Northern Colorado (81-59)
and Florida Gulf Coast (80-64). The Lobos only loss came last week
at home against Oklahoma State (70-56).
LAST WEEK: UMKC & BALL STATE
Northern Arizona women's basketball led for 39 minutes before
surrendering its lead with 39:30 left on the clock in the
Lumberjacks 59-58 loss to UMKC last Thursday. After NAU's Amy
Patton tied the score at 58-58, UMKC's LeAndra Thomas hit a
free-throw with 16 seconds left to put the Kangaroos up one. Patton
was fouled with one second left on the clock, but missed the front
end of a one-and-one to give UMKC the last second victory. The
Lumberjacks dropped another close game on Saturday with a 74-69
loss to Ball State at Worthen Arena. The Lumberjacks last two games
have been decided by a combined six points. Patton led NAU with 26
points off the bench, her second game this season with 25 points or
more.
MULTIMEDIA
New Mexico will have a live video stream and gametracker on
GoLobos.com. NAU will provide radio for New Mexico on AM 930 KAFF
with Andrew Tomsky doing the play-by-play.
HOT SHOOTING
NAU women's basketball ranks third in the Big Sky Conference
in field goal percentage (40.7-percent) for the season. The
Lumberjacks have shot over 40-percent in every game this season.
The Lumberjacks are also second in the league in three-point
percentage (34.2-percent) while limiting opponents to on
28.0-percent shooting from three-point range.
PATTON ON TOP
Freshman guard Amy Patton is leading the Big Sky Conference in
scoring (20.8 points-per-game) and rebounding (8.0
rebounds-per-game). She is the only freshman even in the top 10 in
scoring. Patton has scored in double-figures in every game this
season with a season-high 29 points against UC Riverside and 26
points this past weekend against Ball State.
HOISINGTON STAYING SHARP
Junior forward Lauren Hoisington is leading the Big Sky Conference
in field-goal percentage this year shooting 58.6-percent from the
field. She had a season-high 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the
field against UMKC this past weekend. Hoisington is 16th in the Big
Sky in scoring.
PATTON LIVES UP TO HYPE
Amy Patton turned in a brilliant debut weekend with 16 points
against Pepperdine and then exploded for 29 points against UC
Riverside. The freshman from Tempe, Ariz., shot 6-of-14 from the
field and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Patton continued
to shine against UC Riverside with her first career double-double
scoring a game-high 29 points with 10 rebounds. She shot 10-of-19
from the field and hit six three-pointers in 11 attempts and also
went 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Patton is averaging 22.5
points-per-game and 8.5 rebounds-per-game through her first two
games at the collegiate level.
CHANGE IS GOOD
Through four games, the Lumberjacks are averaging 64.3
points-per-game, a huge difference than the 50.8 points-per-game
NAU averaged through two games a season ago. NAU finished the
2008-09 season averaging 60.4 points-per-game.
FRESHMAN DELIVERS
Tyler Stephens-Jenkins made her collegiate debut and finished with
11 points, one of two Lumberjacks in double-figures in an
exhibition loss against New Mexico Highlands. The freshman from
Goodyear, Ariz., filled the stat line with eight rebounds, two
assists, two steals and one block.
SOME PERSPECTIVE
Head coach Laurie Kelly is the ninth head coach in the history of
Northern Arizona women's basketball, but the first to lead
the Lumberjacks to two 20+ win seasons. The Lumberjacks have
appeared in the conference tournament 14 straight years, second
only to Montana which has made 21 consecutive appearances.
PRESENCE INSIDE
Lauren Hoisington finished 23rd in the Big Sky with 10.3 points
per game and was eighth in the conference among underclassmen. She
was one of only six players in the conference that finished in the
top 15 in rebounds, field-goal percentage, and free-throw
percentage. Hoisington scored in double figures in 16 games and
recorded five double-doubles.
BREAKOUT AHEAD
Caty Huntington finished 12th in the Big Sky in steals with 38 and
was second among freshmen in steals. She tied the single-game at
NAU record for steals when she recorded nine against Sacramento
State on Feb. 21. Huntington scored in double figures five times
and recorded three or more steals on three occasions. She scored a
season-high 21 points in a win at Montana State.
FILLING IT UP
Jenna Galloway is one of only two Lumberjacks to reach 130 points,
100 rebounds, 25 assists, 20 steals, and 10 3-pointers in the
2008-09 season. She appeared in all 30 of the Lumberjacks' games
last year. Galloway was one of six players, and two upperclassmen,
to do so in 2008-09.
AMBITIOUS SCHEDULING
The Lumberjacks will play their first five games away from
Flagstaff with nine of their 13 non-conference games on the road.
The challenging schedule includes matchups against Pepperdine
(WAC), Ball State (MAC), New Mexico (Mountain West), Arkansas State
(Sun Belt), UNLV (Mountain West), and possibly Oregon State
(Pac-10) at the Fairfield Inn/Holiday Inn Thanksgiving Classic at
NAU. Ball State received votes in the 2009 USA TODAY/ESPN Top 25
Preseason Coaches' Poll.
