Connell Named Verizon Wireless WAC Swimmer of the Week

DENVER, Colo. – Fiona Connell
was selected the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference
swimmer of the week, the conference announced Tuesday. Connell, in
her first collegiate meet, placed first in four events in a double
dual meet against New Mexico State and Northern Colorado in Las
Cruces, N. M. this past weekend. Nevada's Aniesa Debaji was
named diver of the week.
Connell, a freshman from Port Macquarie, New South Wales,
Australia, made her Lumberjack debut last week and won all three
individual events she competed in. Connell won the 100-yard
backstroke (56.84), 200-yard backstroke (2:05.82) and 200-yard
individual medley (2:09.36), while also leading off the winning
200-yard medley relay (1:47.45). Her time of 56.84 in the 100
backstroke is the fastest in the WAC this year, while her 200
backstroke time is the third fastest.
Connell and the NAU swimming and diving team will host Washington
State in its first home dual meet of the season on Friday,
November 6 at 3 p.m. at the Wall Aquatic Center. The Lumberjacks
are 1-1 this fall after defeating Northern Colorado 224-75 and
narrowly losing to New Mexico State 152-147.
