Women's Basketball Drops Contest at UNC

GREELEY, Colo. – The Northern
Arizona women's basketball team fell at Northern Colorado
Saturday 59-53. The Lumberjacks dropped to 6-15, 3-5 in Big Sky
play, while the Bears improved to 10-11, 4-4.
UNC overcame a halftime deficit and out-scored the Lumberjacks
33-26 in the second half to record the victory. The Bears were
aided by 30 NAU turnovers, converting them into 21 points to
overcome the Lumberjacks' advantage in the paint (22-14) and
off the bench (14-10).
Senior guard Sade Cunningham led the Lumberjacks with 23 points on
9-of-15 shooting while playing the full 40 minutes in the contest.
UNC was led by Courtney Stoermer, who had 21 points. UNC's
Kate Kevorken posted a double-double with 16 points and 10
rebounds.
NAU led by as many as seven points in the first half while shooting
48 percent from the field. The Bears cut the lead to one point at
the break before opening with a 13-3 run to start the second half
to build a nine-point advantage.
NAU cut the lead to three points twice in the second half, the
final push coming in the final minute. But the Lumberjacks failed
to get a shot off on two consecutive possessions with a chance to
tie the contest. Trailing by four with eight seconds left, Janelle
Matthews' three-pointer was off the mark and Kaisha Brown hit
a pair of free throws to seal the game.
NAU shot 40 percent for the game, while the Bears converted on just
32.7 percent.
NAU returns home to host Portland State and Eastern Washington next
weekend.
