/ March 17, 2009
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Northern Arizona University men's
basketball team faced three teams that advanced to the 2009 NCAA
Tournament field.
Northern Arizona faced two teams that won their conference
tournaments last week. NAU lost to Midwest No. 12 seed Arizona in
December in Tucson. Midwest No. 14 seed North Dakota State won the
Summit League championship, while Portland State won the Big Sky
Tournament and earned a No. 13 seed in the East Region.
NAU and Portland State played an epic four overtime contest in
January the opening weekend of Big Sky Conference play.
The Lumberjacks also have several connections to the tournament via
former coaches in the program. Former NAU assistant coach Jamie
Dixon is the head coach at Pittsburgh, the No. 1 seed in the East
Regional, while former Head Coach Ben Howland is the head coach at
No. 6 seed UCLA in the East Regional.
Dixon will be featured on HBO: Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel on
March 17.
NAU Head Coach Mike Adras will be on The Fan KDUS 1060 in Phoenix
on All Sports with Roc and Manuch on Thursday and Friday discussing
the NCAA Tournament action.
