FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona women's tennis defeated Weber State 6-1 on Sunday at the Flagstaff Athletic Club with dominant performances from a trio of sophomores in Kim Van Ginkel, Edit Suhajda, and Orsi Golovics. The Lumberjacks won the doubles point and took the top three singles positions to secure the victory.

NAU (5-6, 2-1 BSC) is playing its best tennis on the year and it showed on Sunday with a decisive win over Weber State (2-10, 0-2 BSC) less than 24 hours after picking up its first Big Sky Win of the year.

“The girls are pretty positive right now and pumped up,” said director of tennis Kim Bruno. “I think tomorrow we will probably see the best tennis of the weekend.”

Conference is our number one priority. We also have to look at our non-conference as an opportunity for us to be on a national stage. Tomorrow's match is one of our most important ones of the year. We have made our mark [in non-conference] and need to continue that.”

The Lumberjacks earned their first national ranking (72nd) since 2003 largely due to increased competition against ranked opponents. The NAU women have played four top 50 programs this spring and defeated No. 50 New Mexico last weekend, a victory which pushed the Lumberjacks into the national elite.

The Lumberjacks will play for the third consecutive day on Monday, March 9 at 9 a.m. against East Tennessee at the Flagstaff Athletic Club.

“We have to bring it tomorrow for sure,” Bruno said. “East Tennessee State is solid. The girls have been gunning for [this match] the whole weekend. We have two wins in conference and now we can focus on our non-conference again and just keep rolling.”
