2008-09 Men's Basketball Highlights
/ April 14, 2009
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Northern
Arizona men's basketball team had several highlights from the
2008-09 season.
o NAU ranked 13th in the NCAA in
field goal percentage with a Big Sky best 48.1 percent. NAU has
ranked among the Top 15 teams in the nation in each of the last
three seasons, one of four schools in the country to accomplish the
feat (Florida, Kansas, North Carolina) and joins Florida as the
only two schools in the nation to rank among the Top 15 in each of
the last four seasons.
o NAU faced three teams that advanced to the 2009 NCAA Tournament
field. NAU lost to Midwest No. 12 seed Arizona in December in
Tucson. Midwest No. 14 seed North Dakota State won the Summit
League championship, while Portland State won the Big Sky
Tournament and earned a No. 13 seed in the East Region.
o NAU and Portland State played an epic four overtime game
regionally televised game on Altitude. It was the longest game in
NAU school history, equaling the only other 4OT game way back in
1966, and tied for the longest in Big Sky history. It was the
seventh time a league team had played a four-overtime game, and the
first since 1999.
o NAU's strength of schedule ranked 21st in the country at
the conclusion of the non-conference schedule. NAU played at 2008
NCAA Tournament participants Arizona, Stanford and UNLV, as well as
at Wichita State and North Dakota State.
o All four players/student coaches finishing their careers are on
schedule to graduate with Zarko Comagic, student assistant Will
Hensley and Josh Wilson finishing their degrees in May and Jermaine
Bishop completing his course work in December. Head Coach Mike
Adras will have graduated 34 of the 39 players who have finished
their careers during his tenure when they complete their
coursework.
o Sophomore Shane Johannsen led all Division I players in field
goal percentage at 72.7 percent (cbssports.com), the top figure in
the Big Sky Conference. He reset the individual school record set
by Dan McClintock in 1998-99. He connected on 67-of-82 attempts
from the field in league play for a conference-best 81.7 percent.
He did not qualify for the NCAA statistics based on the 5 made
field goals per game minimum (4.2 per game).
o Sophomore Cameron Jones capped off his second season with
selection to the All-Big Sky second team as picked by the league
coaches. Senior guard Josh Wilson was chosen to the All-Big Sky
team for the second consecutive season, earning honorable mention
accolades.
o Wilson achieved several milestones during his senior season.
Wilson became one of three players in Big Sky Conference history to
record 600 assists and score 1,000 points, the 24th member of the
1,000-point club at NAU. He finished first in school history and
third in the Big Sky Conference annals with 636 career assists.
Wilson is one of four players in school history to record 3,500 or
more career minutes, ranking first with 3,602 minutes. Wilson also
played in 117 career games, tied for the second-best total in
school history.
o Senior Jermaine Bishop was a finalist for the The V Foundation
Comeback of the Year Award. The award is given to the
student-athlete or team that embodies the spirit and courage
represented by Coach Jim Valvano and the memorable and motivating
challenge delivered in his acceptance speech at the 1993 ESPY
Awards - "Don't' Give Up…Don't Ever Give Up!".
o NAU had 11 of its games on national and regional television,
including nine on FSN Arizona and eight on Fox College Sports. NAU
also participated in the Big Sky Conference Game of the Week on
Altitude, while the Stanford game was featured Comcast Bay
Area.
