BERLIN – This weekend at the IAAF World Championships, Northern Arizona University will be well represented by both Lopez Lomong (USA) and David McNeill (AUS) who qualified for the event, and will represent their respective countries.

Lomong qualified for the championships when he won the 1,500 meters at the USA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. back in June. Lomong outran Nike teammate Leo Manzano down the home stretch to win the event in 3:41.68, edging Manzano's 3:41.82.

Lomong represented the United States at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, reaching the semifinals in the 1500m. He was also the flag bearer for the United States in the Opening Ceremonies.

For the Lumberjacks, Lomong was a two-time National Champion (1,500m, Outdoors, 2007; 3,000m., Indoors, 2007), five-time All-American, 12-time Big Sky Conference individual champion and holder of five school records at Northern Arizona University. He competed for cross country from 2005-07 and the track and field for the 2006-07 seasons.

Running for his native country of Australia, McNeill qualified for the World Championships when he ran in the Telstra Zatopek Classic over Christmas break. McNeill recorded a time of 28:03.02 in the 10,000 meter event, giving him a spot on the B qualifier team. That time was good enough to send the Lumberjack to Berlin.

McNeill garnered All-American honors when he finished 15th overall with a time of 29:53 at the NCAA Cross Country Championships last November. His efforts helped the men finish sixth in the event.

In June, McNeill finished second in the finals of the men's 5000 meters at the NCAA Division I 2009 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. His time of 14:05.79 earned the Lumberjack his fifth career All-American honor.

The IAAF Championships begin Saturday with Lomong competing at 9:29 a.m. PST in the 1,500 meter event. He will be in heat three. Should Lomong advance, the semi-final race takes place Monday at 11:10 a.m. PST.

The 10,000 meter final that features McNeill is also slated for Monday, and begins at 11:50 a.m. PST.

The IAAF Championships will be televised on the Versus Network. Dish Network users can find the event on channel 151, and on DirecTV it is channel 603.
