Volleyball Rallies to a Fifth-Set, Falls 3-2 to Wyoming in Home Opener
Women's Volleyball / September 11, 2009
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Lauren Campbell hit a career-high .375
with 19 kills as Northern Arizona volleyball pushed Wyoming to five
sets, but the Lumberjacks were unable to capture the win in a 3-2
defeat at Rolle Activity Center Friday night on day one of the 2009
Fiesta Bowl Tournament. The women will play two matches on Saturday
at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
NAU (2-5) fought back after being down 2-0 to Wyoming taking sets
three and four to even the match 2-2. The Cowgirls managed to hold
on for the win by scores of 25-22, 25-22, 16-25, 22-25, 15-8 in
front of a crowd of 1,087.
“We love being able to fill up the stands,” said senior
Jana Mays-Robinson. “It's awesome. It's the
energy that helps us come back. We were down two and with their
support it helps us to keep our heads up and fight for
it.”
In set two, a pivotal ruling went against the Lumberjacks putting
Wyoming up 23-22. The Cowgirls went on to take the set and looked
poised to sweep NAU.
“That was a tough call,” Mays-Robinson said of the
controversial 23-22 point. “Normally a call like that can
actually sway the match, but we moved on. Game two was over and we
knew we came to play. We fought for every point after
that.”
NAU showed their resiliency and answered with a commanding 25-16
win in set three and edged out Wyoming 25-22 in set four. With the
score tied 7-7 in the fifth, the Lumberjacks were within reach of
their third victory of the season, but Wyoming closed the match on
an 8-1 run moving to 5-2 on the year.
“Even though we lost it still shows how determined we are and
how much heart each person on our team has,” said
Mays-Robinson. “We were down and we easily could have rolled
over. We fought back every point. We got it to game five. It will
be fixing those little things throughout the match that will get us
those types of wins.”
Campbell led all players with 19 kills and recorded six digs. Kelli
Dallman posted a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs while Anna
Gott added 23 digs and Mays-Robinson totaled 44 assists. Wyoming's
Barbara Lasic put up 60 assist to lead players and Dani Bedore
recorded a team-high 14 kills. Four other Cowgirls converted 12
attacks for kills.
The Lumberjacks will open day two of the Fiesta Tournament on
Saturday at 10 a.m. against The Citadel (1-7), which lost 3-0 to
Utah State in the early match. Utah State and Wyoming will play
next at 1 p.m. followed by The Citadel and Wyoming at 4 p.m. and
Utah State and NAU at 7 p.m. to close competition.
