Soccer Breaks Consecutive Shutout Records in 2-0 win at Weber State
/ October 09, 2010
OGDEN, Utah – The Lumberjacks established new program
records with their sixth-straight shutout and a school record 529
minute and 35 second shutout streak in a 2-0 win over Weber State
on Saturday in Ogden. Northern Arizona, which got first half goals
from senior Kristi
Andreassen and junior Chelsea Bednarz,
improved to 6-3-3 overall and 1-0-1 in the Big Sky while Weber
State fell to 1-12-1 and 0-1-1 in conference.
Northern Arizona, which has not allowed a goal since the 82:56
mark against USC on September 12, surpassed the previous school
record of five consecutive shutouts set in 2007. The Lumberjacks
also surpassed the previous opponent scoreless streak of 513:53,
also set in 2007, when Saturday's game hit the 74:19 mark with a
zero in the opponent score column.
The Lumberjacks put three early shots on the board before Weber
State had its first attempt stopped by NAU junior goalkeeper Tori
Rocke in the 17th minute. Less then four minutes later, the
Lumberjacks would net the first goal of the game. Andreassen
attempted a free kick from 35 yards out, beating Weber State
goalkeeper Ryann Waldman for her team-leading sixth goal of the
season and a 1-0 NAU lead.
NAU added to its lead in the 27th minute. Junior Ashley
Marrapode sent a cross from the right side into the Weber State
box, finding Bednarz for a header into the Wildcat goal to double
the NAU lead. Each team would only attempt one shot for the
remainder of the half to give NAU a 2-0 lead at the break.
Weber State came out firing in the second half, but a
combination of blocked shots by the defense and two second-half
saves by Rocke maintained the blank sheet. Weber State's Jessie
Baddley nearly scored on a shot off the crossbar with 15 seconds
remaining, but the Lumberjacks would hold on for the shutout and
their first conference win of the season.
The Wildcats held a 10-3 shot advantage in the second half and
out-shot NAU 13-9 for the game despite being held scoreless. Rocke
totaled four saves for her sixth straight shutout (one shared) and
extended her NAU career shutout record to 16 solo shutouts while
Waldman made five stops for Weber State. Each team only attempted
two corner kicks in the contest.
Northern Arizona plays four of its five remaining conference
games at home, starting next Friday against Sacramento State at 3
p.m. in Lumberjack Stadium.
