Women's Basketball Pushed to Overtime, Falls to Utah State 80-75

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona women's basketball lost in overtime, 80-75, to Utah State on Saturday at the Rolle Activity Center.  The Lumberjacks held a late lead in regulation but a Utah State run forced the game to extra time.

NAU (4-4) and Utah State (4-4) played a close first half with five points being the largest lead for either team.  The Lumberjacks twice held that lead but the Aggies quickly cut into it and the majority of the first half was played within one possession.  The women entered the half with a 32-29 lead.

The Lumberjacks came out strong in the second half shooting 46.7 percent from the field.  The women opened up an 11-point lead aided by a 13-5 run to start the half.  NAU held a double digit lead till the nine minute mark before Utah State made its run.

The Aggies trimmed NAU's lead to two points with 2:30 left but the Lumberjacks managed to push the margin back to seven with a minute remaining after a layup from Amy Patton, three-point field goal from Tyler Stephens-Jenkins, and two made free throws by Vickie Toney.

With NAU up 68-64, Utah State's Jennifer Schlott hit a three-pointer to cut the Lumberjacks' lead to one.  Patton scored NAU's final basket in regulation after running the clock down to six seconds but Utah State's Devyn Christensen managed to get off a last second shot tying the game at 70-70 with a second on the clock to force overtime.

Patton and Shay May scored the first baskets of the extra period followed by a layup from Schlott to put the score at 74-72 in favor of the Lumberjacks.

With 2:21 left in overtime, NAU led 75-72 after a made free throw by point guard Vickie Toney.  It was the last point of the game for the Lumberjacks as Utah State closed the game on an 8-0 run to pull off the come-from-behind win.

NAU shot 41 percent for the game and 30 percent from three-point range.  The Lumberjacks continued their struggles from the free throw line converting just 11-of-21 attempts.

Four NAU players scored in double figures led by Stephens-Jenkins' 17.  Katie Pratt finished with 15 points followed by Patton's 14 and May's 12.

The award is based on team grade point averages, graduation rates and the number of all-conference performers with a grade point average above a 3.0, as well as Men's and Women's All Sports points.
